Solution to: Optical Illusions: Confusing Colors

Section A appears to be darker than section B, but this is just an illusion: both sections have the same color. You can see this if we connect the colored sections as shown below. The cause of the illusion is that section A is surrounded by light sections and section B is surrounded by dark sections. In addition, section B is within the cylinder's shadow, which makes the brain think that section B must be lighter than it seems. This illusion was published by Edward H. Adelson in 1995.
